Our tour of the city of Cusco begins at the Plaza de Armas, the heart of the city, where we can appreciate the unique mix of Inca and colonial architecture. We visit the majestic Cathedral of Cusco, famous for its baroque altarpieces and valuable works of art including the outstanding "Last Supper" with an Andean representation. Then, we head to the Temple of the Sun or Qorikancha, considered one of the most important enclosures dedicated to the Sun god in Inca times, on which the Convent of Santo Domingo was built. Here, we will be able to observe the impressive Inca engineering that resists the passage of time.
After exploring the historic center, we will take a short bus ride to the outskirts of the city to visit the nearby archaeological sites. We start in Sacsayhuamán, an imposing Inca fortress built with huge stones that fit perfectly without the need for mortar. We continue to Qenqo, a maze of tunnels and underground galleries used for religious ceremonies. We continue to Puka Pukara, an ancient military fortress that offered protection to the city, and finally, we visit Tambomachay, known as the Inca’s Bath, a sacred place dedicated to the cult of water. We returned to Cusco after a morning full of history and culture.
